PUBG creator is over battle royale for the next big thing

We probably will remember 2018 as the year of battle royale in the gaming industry. But since it’s 2019, game devs better find a new hit till players’ interest to that genre didn’t run dry. That’s why we see that developers like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ Brendan Greene switched to something completely different.

“Together with a team of game developers and researchers,” Greene announced via Twitter last month, “we will explore new possibilities of interaction and connection within the game space.” And that means the end of battle royale for him.

He didn’t say it straight in his interview with Gamesindustry, but he mentioned that rest of the PUBG developers “have the reins of battle royale, they know what PUBG and our battle royale is. They understand what we wish to see in the game and what we want to do to it moving forwards.” So he saw this as an opportunity to move to the next project.

So, what’s next?

Unfortunately, he keeps in secret his next project ’cause he’s still in the team-building phase, but he did say that he has time to explore. Maybe it will be more MMO-ish game like Destiny 2 “There is no deadline here, this is us with a few years to play. Gaming and the industry has become so hard, this is a very lucky thing to have. We can genuinely explore and be curious for some time.” In fact, because of the huge success of PUBG, Greene can have his time to research and work on new ideas and just explore.

According to him, battle royale still has grow potential. He used esports as an example of where all that thing probably might go. But for Greene, he wants “to have some fun but also see if [he and his new team] can do some good.”
